Motocross Information

Motocross is motorcycle all-terrain racing usually held on enclosed off road circuits. Originally, it It was called scrambles, and then later motocross (the term scrambles came about since Motocross sometimes took place in wet weather leading to muddy more wild riding). Motocross combined the French moto with cross-country. Bicycle motocross, also known as BMX) is the equivalent sport for non-motorized dirt bikes.

The sport of Motocross evolved in the UK. Back then, off-road bikes were very simiilar to those used on the street today. It was the intense competition over rugged terrain that led to technical improvements in motorcycles. Rather than rigid frames, suspensions were used.

Japanese factories seem to rule the 1980's by changing the typical two-stroke air-cooled, twin-shock rear suspension machines with water-cooled and fitted with single-shock absorber rear suspension. Then, a few years later, tougher environmental laws in California forced manufacturers to develop environmentally friendly four-stroke technology. Now all the major manufacturers have begun competing with four-stroke machines.
